A New Bag

Birdie Sling
While my mom was here visiting, we had a good time visiting quilt shops in the area. We stopped at Prairie Point in Shawnee, Harper's in Overland Park, Sarah's Fabrics in Lawrence and Stitch On, also in Lawrence. A mini shop hop of sorts. Mom let me pick out some fabric and we spent an afternoon making this Birdie Sling pattern by Amy Butler.

I have been a bit intimidated by the idea of making a purse or bag. Layers of batting, interfacing, fabric, lining, zippers, turning inside out... Now that I've helped with the process I'm very confident that I can go solo next time (without a zipper).

Here's a peek at the lining. I really love these Innocent Crush fabrics by Anna Maria Horner. I've been using the bag as a tote and it's so handy. Definitely room for a notebook or two and a camera plus all the other essentials.

I've been making a list of sewing goals for the next year in my head. I'll share those with you next time. Have you been thinking about next year yet?

OK, Melissa. You're about the third guild member to make an adorable Birdie Sling. I think this just got added to my list of "to dos".

What fun to shop at all of those stores with your mom!

Can't wait to see what you have planned for next year!

I'm with Shea. This is so cute. I must make one. I love the fabric you picked! Were the directions easy to follow? I'm new to bags...

I've been making noodlehead clutches (there's a tutorial if you search) and they have zippers. I'm on my 9th bag now and the last two are decent enough to give away... Still need to work a little on the ends of the zippers, but I'm getting better!

But a bag like this would be VERY nice for me to make myself...

Thanks Shea and Nikki! I only read a few of the directions (my mom was leading the way) and they seemed pretty clear. And Lauren said it was pretty easy.

I can see me getting into bag making = dangerous :)

I love your sling - especially the lining fabric! I'm also started to think about what I want to accomplish in the New Year - so many project ideas its hard to pick where to start.

Thank you Cara!

You are so right. It's very hard to pick what you want to focus on when there are so many things floating around in your head. I made my list today and had to laugh! I'd have to go on a year long retreat to accomplish it all :)
